Blog#7 Fresh

Fresh! Fresh! Get your fresh produce here! These are the things we hear walking down a farmers market, but this "Fresh" is about a film. This film is not only talking about fresh produce but most of the products we are consuming today. From the food on our dinner plates to where the food is still walking around.  Fresh is geared towards people that want to know more information about how and what they are doing to produce good quality food and not so good quality food. Anyone who is researching this topic or people that used to be farmers would benefit from this film. This film elaborates on different famers stories; how they are raising chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep. Each farmer has their own backstories, some came from huge plantations and some are local people trying to make their aguculture better.

In my opinion, I think that we should be more aware of what we are consuming and how it is being processed. This is important because this impacts our own health. There are many industrial livestock productions that we currently have that are not safe. With big industry companies there have many pitfalls like; diseases, this happen with having to many animals confined together, in return this leads to farmers feeding lower quality feed, injecting hormones to produce more out of the livestock, and injecting antibiotics so they stay alive. This all transfers to us when we consume the product. Fresh did a great job elaborating on different types of farmers and what they have experienced. I was heart broken when they were transporting baby chicks in big crates to a warehouse, then throwing each batch on the ground, as they hit the ground you hear this big thud. When I saw this it made me think of animal abuse. We don't pay attention to this matter because we don't personally have to go through it. With supermarkets and local markets having everything prepackaged for us, all the hard work is done we just simply pick it up and pay.

Imagine a world that didn't have big industries that mass produced, would we run out of food or would we get involved and help our local farmers? The industry has come a long way but, I think that we can be more mindful of what goes on behind the scenes. There is nothing wrong with staying informed and educated. When I think of the farmers in this film, one stood out to me the most. This farmer had an abundance of pigs, he kept them in close proxcmity and would inject them with antibiotics to keep them healthy. He then gets an injury by one of his bores horns that caused him to be hospitalized, since he was injecting his livestock with antibiotics, the antibiotics given by the hospitall were not working. This was due to a new strain virus that mutated from his livestock, almost dying he came to the realization that this wasn't worth it. His morals stepped in and stopped him from mass producing. Now he has limited his livestock, giving better feed, and no injections. It was eye opening to me because I thought; why did it take all this to make him wake up and realize this wasn't right. The money? That is why I think we should care about this issue and not turn a blind eye. We shouldn't have the mentality of; if I don't know then I won't care, or this doesn't apply to me because ultimately it does. If we didnt have farmers what would we eat?
